Occasionally there are paid missions to support UN agencies in medical education.
Typically 1 or 2 team members are sent on these missions.
RAPID RESPONSE TEAM (RRT)
What is it ?
GlobalMedic's Rapid Response Team is deployed following natural or man-made disasters to provide emergency relief services. The team has a medical component that involves emergency medical treatment, administering vaccinations and setting up temporary field hospitals. The team also deploys with a specialized water team that is responsible for providing clean water to the local population. This is accomplished by the use of chemicals and by the teams various ‘water units' that filter and purify local water.
Where is it based?
GlobalMedic is based out of Toronto. We have gotten a lot of interest from volunteers across the country, however as of right now we only deploy out of Toronto for logistics purposes. On some missions, the situation may arise that we need to do relief rotations of the initial team on a disaster deployment. In this case we may deploy members out of other provinces. Out-of-province volunteers are still welcome to register, as we are hoping to expand our team to include chapters in other major cities across Canada.
Who is on the team ?
- Emergency and medical professionals make up the majority of the RRT (Paramedics, firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, etc)
- Engineers (specifically water engineers)
- Skilled Tradesman
Missions
The disaster relief missions are usually 10-14 days in length including travel. Anywhere from 2-10 people will be deployed. Team members will NOT receive a salary for these missions.
DMGF provides : Airfare, in-country transport (destination only), food, accommodation, uniforms (tactical BDU shirt, tactical pants, t-shirts and hats), training on equipment.
Applicant provides : Footwear, rain gear, valid passport with at least 7 months before expiration, suitable immunizations, time (most team members either take holiday time or a leave from work)
Training
DMGF holds training/orientation days several times per year. We like to get new team members out to these events before you are sent on a mission. During the 6-8 hour orientation you will meet all the new and existing team members and you will learn how to set up and operate the various equipment, including the water units and the inflatable field hospitals.
