GlobalMedic donates Water Purification Tablets and Antibiotics to Haiti In February, 2008, GlobalMedic donated 20,000 tablets of antibiotics to the people of Haiti and 50,000 Aquatab Water Purification Tablets, enough to purify 50,000 litres of water. Haiti , the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere , only 52% of Haitians have access to clean drinking water and limited access to basic medications. Water is usually extracted from ditches, open ponds or polluted rivers. The United Nations Development Program has declared the status of Haitians' health care as catastrophic. GlobalMedic's donation was coordinated and distributed by Police Officer Constable Anne Gouin of Durham Region. PC Gouin served as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping effort in the Caribbean nation, training local law enforcement for 9 months. PC Gouin expressed her personal experiences in Haiti and described the peoples' plight to GlobalMedic RRT member Police Constable Glen Turpin. In turn, PC Turpin helped facilitate the GlobalMedic response of Aquatabs and antibiotics. PC Gouin returned to Haiti to distribute the GlobalMedic donation and also toys for children in the community. PC Gouin dispensed the aid to clinics and instructed village leaders on Aquatab usage. Doctors began to utilize the medications immediately when treating local youth patients. PC Gouin would like to relay the sincere gratitude from those who received the donation. |
